déjà vu
Green Pheasants
At first glance, it appears to be a leather product with a zipper, but it is in fact a box created entirely using traditional lacquer art techniques.
The texture of leather is expressed through wari-nuri (layered lacquer techniques), and the zipper is rendered using maki-e (gold and silver lacquer decoration).
The theme of this work is the visualization of déjà vu.
The cause of déjà vu has not been scientifically clarified, but there is a theory that it is influenced by ancestral memory.
The pattern on the top surface of the box is inspired by the Chinese lantern plant (hōzuki).
In Japan, the Chinese lantern plant is said to serve as a guide for one’s ancestors to return home.
