The work inscribed with the words “preconception” is used here as an element of composition. In a traditional hanging scroll, the main work is placed at the center. In this piece, however, this convention is deliberately overturned, and the textile (kirin or decorative fabric) is placed at the center instead. Furthermore, the textile itself is intentionally one that would normally be considered unusable due to its many holes. The green paper at the top and bottom is called momigami, a traditional Japanese paper-making technique. 【Message】 In discussion with Chima, a calligraphy and ink artist, we were encouraged to challenge the hierarchical relationship between artist and mounting craftsman, and to create a work that disrupts this structure. While overturning the conventional roles, the piece is still composed within the framework of a traditional hanging scroll, preserving its essential form.
