This is a lantern developed to showcase the traditional craft of Ise katagami, which has been passed down since the Muromachi period, in a new form. The Ise katagami used in this lantern (created by traditional craftsman Isao Uchida) has been used for a long time to dye kimono fabrics with ancient Japanese patterns and designs, making it a valuable asset in Japanese art. The frame is made of lacquer, making it resistant to scratches and color fading. You can experience the beauty of Japanese tradition through this lantern and enjoy the hospitality of a "Japanese space."

Wrapped in the gentle azure light, just as the restless sea calms down, your mind will become serene and clear. Along with deep meditation, your inner flower will bloom. This lamp is crafted using a technique called "Ito-kake Mandala." The sheen of silk threads and their soft appearance are soothing, and as the sun sets, the vivid mandala pattern is beautifully depicted.

Congratulations on your award. When discussing this piece, the committee raised a positive question: what sets this work apart as a gem of "wa" (Japanese culture) in a world filled with similar lamp creations? The discussion led to an in-depth exploration that set this work apart from others. In that sense, it is a truly valuable recognition, and we celebrate it wholeheartedly. As an evaluator, I also reconsidered the allure of this work. As a result, I believe that this piece possesses three unique charms in line with the tradition of "wa," making it worthy of being actively acknowledged as a representative work of contemporary Japanese culture. Firstly, the meticulous beauty of intricately woven silk threads, created by hand craftsmanship, stands out. Before even turning on the light, it's a delight to gaze upon as an object of beauty. Secondly, the exceptional precision and accuracy in the craftsmanship make the sharpness of the imagery projected across a wide space a major strength of this work. It can be likened to how a high-pixel camera photo withstands enlargement.

When you turn on the light, the patterns shine through like shadow puppets, filling the room with a traditional Japanese vibe. It's a way to experience Japanese tradition through light and enjoy a welcoming "Japanese space" ambiance.

I'm currently diving into research on silk threads reflecting ancient Japanese colors, indigo dyeing, plant dyeing, and handmade washi paper. I aim to blend traditional Japanese techniques with modern string art to create art that feels both fresh and nostalgic, serving as a refuge for the soul.
