Mu-ni Mu-san

The work is inscribed with the four-character idiom “Mu-ni Mu-san.” “Mu-ni Mu-san” means something that exists only once and has no substitute. Originally a Buddhist term, it refers to the idea that there is only one path to enlightenment, with no alternative ways.

The characters read “Mu-ni Mu-san,” but they are not intended to be read in a literal sense. The work was created with the intention of forming a one-of-a-kind ink space that exists nowhere else. At first glance it may appear completely black, but within it unfolds a world unique to ganshi paper, ink, and brush. In addition, the work is mounted in a way that allows it to be viewed from multiple angles, so the expressions of ink on the sides can also be appreciated.
