SASAKI Gakuto
At first glance, this appears to be a leather item with a zipper. In fact, however, it is entirely crafted using traditional Japanese lacquerware techniques. The form is created using the kanshitsu (dry lacquer) technique, in which layers of hemp cloth are bonded with lacquer. The metal fittings are rendered with maki-e decoration, while the texture of leather is recreated through a specialized lacquer-finishing technique.
The theme of this work is “visualizing assumptions.” Zippers and leather goods are familiar objects in everyday life and can be seen as surfaces that conceal what lies beneath. Although the zipper on this piece cannot be opened, the work itself functions as a simple box. Upon opening the lid, viewers discover a black lacquer interior adorned with raden (mother-of-pearl inlay), revealing that the piece is in fact made entirely of lacquer.
