From Early Summer to Midsummer – A Special Encounter with History and Beauty in Nagoya

Nestled in the heart of Nagoya, the historic ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurant) Kawabun has welcomed guests for more than 400 years. This distinguished venue now serves as the setting for a special pop-up exhibition celebrating the beauty and spirit of Japanese traditional culture.

The exhibition features a carefully curated selection of outstanding artists, including past recipients of the Japan Traditional Culture Grand Prix, as well as emerging creators with strong ties to the Tokai region who are shaping the future of Japanese craftsmanship.

Rather than displaying all of the works in a single gallery, the artworks are thoughtfully placed throughout the building—in private rooms, hallways, and other spaces—allowing visitors to experience a journey where exceptional craftsmanship harmonizes with the rich history and atmosphere of the ryotei itself.

The exhibition showcases a diverse range of traditional Japanese arts, including lacquerware, bamboo craftsmanship, ceramics, vibrant cloisonné enamel, washi paper art, and bokusho (abstract sumi ink art). Together, these masterful works resonate with Kawabun's elegant architecture, creating unforgettable moments that can only be experienced in this unique setting.

As you explore this historic residence, we invite you to discover new perspectives on Japanese culture and the stories embodied within each work of art.
