暁〜Akatsuki〜

Introduction of Artist

暁〜Akatsuki〜 is pioneering the potential of string art in various fields. Using a technique called string mandala, she places nails on wooden boards and meticulously weaves threads based on mathematical theories. By combining Japanese traditional materials such as washi paper, iwaenogu pigments, and foil, she enhances the rarity of the art. She has received the Japan Wabunka Grand Prix for her outstanding work in string mandala lamps called "Suminagi." By using highly transparent materials for the structural elements, she achieves a floating effect where only the silhouette of the thread stands out, inviting viewers into an enveloping experience. Practicing art therapy, she aims to create art that resonates with people's emotions.

Japanese paints often have names inspired by the seasons and nature, like "Shigure" (autumn rain), "Kuchiba" (decaying leaves), and "Yanagiba-ura" (underside of willow leaves). Even though my art is themed around scenes from around the world, I feel like it still reflects the harmonious colors of Japan's four seasons. About imagine "String Mandala Lamp Suminagi" as bubbling springs and the universe within our hearts. "KAGUYA" represents the layers of a bamboo princess's kimono emerging from bamboo. I'm currently diving into research on silk threads reflecting ancient Japanese colors, indigo dyeing, plant dyeing, and handmade washi paper. I aim to blend traditional Japanese techniques with modern string art to create art that feels both fresh and nostalgic, serving as a refuge for the soul. Mandalas are created by people from diverse cultural backgrounds around the world. Symmetry and cycles are believed to have a calming effect on the mind. When I make string mandalas, I feel a mindfulness effect as my breathing aligns with a certain rhythm and my mind calms down. Whether I'm cutting watermelon and kiwi or gazing at the Milky Way, there's always a mandala present. People feeling peace within mandalas across borders might just be inevitable.
