The yokai Amabie is said to have appeared on the Japanese seashore at the end of the Edo period (1603-1868) during a plague epidemic. The half-human, half-fish yokai with a bird-like beak disappeared into the sea, saying, "If there is an epidemic, show people a copy of me. Many Japanese artists have created their own Amabie artwork, believing it to be a blessing to ward off plague and disease. May it be a talisman for your heart.
